Recording video screenshot without FRAPS

10 12 2009

I’ve been using FRAPS for some time to record video from my applications. The problems with FRAPS are that it both adds a watermark and is only capable to capture the entire screen. In a recent endeavor I wanted to record only a part of the screen for a demonstration. This was when I found some new functionality in Expression Studio…

Expression Encoder

With Microsoft Expression Encoder, capturing a “video screenshot” is very simple.

This can be used for anything from small video clips for a presentation to observing user behavior while using your new software. The video stream can then be edited and fooled around with before final encoding.

To use the video screenshot capturer, install Microsoft Expression and start the Encoder Screen Capture tool. You can start it independently or from Expression Encoder. Either way, it’s a new favorite tool of mine.
